Take a look at this before photo and you may feel like I did when I first visited the site…yikes!!!!! This steep backyard offered very little to the young family. They yearned for play space for the kids and a pretty garden to soften the landscape.
Even getting down to the backyard was hazardous.
I’m not a huge fan of block walls, but in this case it was the way to go. It enabled us to push back the grade and create a two tiered garden. We then added beautiful granite steps for easy access to the new space. Fabulous Francis and the team worked up until the first real snow to get all the masonry installed.
Next up was to stabilize the right side of the hill with boulders and add a trio of River Valley birches with an underplanting of ornamental grasses.
We sprinkled in viburnum, hydrangeas, hosta, itea, catmint, giant ferns and some lovely bleeding hearts. Then, we lay down a carpet of freshly farmed sod to complete the project. Now we just have to convince the kids to stay off until it takes root!
