J.P.-JUST PERFECT

When I first visited this tiny Jamaica Plain backyard I was overwhelmed by the huge trampoline, lack of light and BIG water problem. It seemed that after a good rain, all the water from the neighboring streets found its way down to this low muddy marsh. We upcycled the trampoline to a new home and cut down a few struggling trees. Now with more room, a new fence and light, what to do about the water issue?

My clients were game enough to go along with my plan to create a beautiful dry riverbed that also functioned as a huge drywell. We installed a 4’ deep by 5’ wide drywell to catch all the water. Luiz and Lucas had tough work ahead of them but they built it beautifully using five different grades of stone to make it appear more natural.

We began to change the grade to create embankments to install new plantings.

Once that was complete, we started to add the plant material. Handpicked boulders and stones were laid in the bed. A mix of non-native and native plantings lined the “shore”.

We built a faux waterfall on one end and had the winding “river” lead up to a striking red birch.
